United: Beyond The Promised Land |
(Roadshow Entertainment)
RRP: $29.95
Manchester
United are widely regarded as the biggest club in
world football — and for good reason. United
has the largest fan base world-wide and also boasts
one of the world’s largest sports franchise.
Only a select few have had the privilege of waltzing
behind Old Trafford’s mystical doors, witnessing
how the United machine is oiled both in a financial
and physical sense. Not any more.
Manchester United: Beyond the Promised Land provides
insight into one of the greatest football clubs
of all-time. The documentary, taken the season after
United recorded their historic Treble — victory
in the FA Cup Final, triumph in the English Premier
League and crowned European champions — follows
the journey of the team’s triumphs in Japan,
China, Australia, South America and Europe.
Viewers are whisked behind the scenes to witness
a more relaxed United outfit during a round of golf
for the Manchester Cup, a tournament contested by
the management team and playing staff. This footage
is both unique and enlightening as it portrays the
team in a different light, relaying the importance
of team bonding, rapport and life away from the
football pitch.
An insight into Sir Alex Ferguson’s dealing
with his players also strikes curiosity and fascination.
Away from the park, Ferguson exudes ‘normality’
rather than boasting an intimidating presence a
world-class coach would normally demand. He seems
both accessible to his staff and players alike.
A glimpse at the business end of things provides
evidence as to why and how United are seen as one
of the more successful sporting franchises on the
market. United’s £30 million deal with
Vodafone is given exposure, along with the objectives
of both parties as to how the companies can benefit
from strategic marketing, brand placement and products.
A unique view of the United fan culture is also
explored, revealing how the club is their religion,
free from politics and a way of life. “My
wife always says to me, ‘we cannot go out
and meet anybody and not talk about Manchester United’,
which is very true,” says one fan from New
York. “I find that within five minutes, I’m
like some crazed, religious preacher.
“Life revolves around Manchester United for
so many people, including me, there’s no doubt
about that. So I say to all fans, ‘Get up
and chant.’”
Additional features include:
• Director’s commentary
• Extended interviews: Sir Alex
Ferguson; Roy Keane; David Beckham;
Sir Bobby Charlton; and Ryan Giggs
